There were many memorable moments from the Grand Ole Opry’s 100th anniversary that will be discussed for years to come. People were moved to tears by Carrie Underwood’s heartfelt homage to Randy Travis. The broadcast performance ended with a huge chorus of country music artists singing “I Will Always Love You” for Dolly Parton. And a stirring off-air rendition of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” concluded the evening in true rural style as the cameras cut.
However, as admirers reveled in the moment’s enchantment, one query kept coming up:
Where were Willie Nelson and George Strait?
Not an homage. No show. Not even a brief appearance. For two of the most well-known figures in country music to be absent from such a celebration? A few eyebrows went up. However, the solution is simpler than you may imagine.
Reasons for the Absence of the King and the Outlaw
Let’s be clear: there isn’t any animosity, conflict, or disregard for the industry. Why weren’t Willie Nelson and George Strait on that stage? They are not Grand Ole Opry members.
Isn’t that shocking? It’s true, though. Willie and George were not present for the ceremony because they are not now members of Opry.
The Journey of Willie Nelson Back to Texas
For a while, Willie was a member of Opry. According to the American Songwriter, he joined in 1965, shortly after making his stage debut in 1964, but by 1972, he had finished.
Willie gave up his membership, packed up, and returned to Texas. The expectation at the time was for Opry members to play live in Nashville 26 times a year, which didn’t work with Willie’s schedule or way of life.
Playing in Texas on Friday and returning to the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday night is not possible, he stated. That is simply not how things turn out.
In addition, he was becoming irritated with Nashville’s strict control over his music. He saw it as an opportunity to start over after a difficult period—his marriage split, his home burned down. Willie established his groove on his own terms, and the Outlaw movement was sparked by that new beginning in Austin.
