Joseph Whelan, a 26-year-old tool salesman from Wolverhampton, came to the X Factor UK stage calmly and determined to make his four-year-old son Kian proud. He discussed his ten years of trying to make it in the music industry and how, after becoming a father, he made the decision to try something new. As soon as they saw a loving father with his small son, the judges and audience cheered him on, but they had no idea what the surprise was going to unfold.
A powerful, pure rock sound filled the theater as Joseph began to sing Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love,” replacing his speaking voice. The makeover was so spectacular and amazing that the judges were clearly in awe of it. He sang with persistent passion and a natural rock star intensity, proving that his guarded manner belied a great deal of skill. More than just a song, his performance was a powerful statement of his dedication and genuine love for music.
As the audition came to an end, he was given a jubilant standing ovation from the audience and a poignant reunion with his son on stage after four “yes” votes. Mel B and Gary Barlow praised his incredible voice and authentic rock sound, and the judges were raving over him. Joseph’s journey from a humble salesman to a rock star was a truly inspirational tale that showed that, with the right work, you can achieve your goals and make the people you care about the most proud.
