19-year-old crushed by forklift chooses to amputate bottom half of his body

A young laborer from Montana named Loren Schauers was leading a typical existence until September 2019, when everything abruptly changed.

The brave adolescent made the unthinkable decision to have half of his body amputated in order to survive when faced with a life-or-death situation.

According to accounts, Loren Schauers, 19, of Great Falls, Montana, was operating a forklift truck when it fell and dropped fifty feet to the earth. The teen was pinned beneath the four-ton car.

Conscious the whole time, Loren saw the truck pin down the lower half of his torso and crush his right arm.

Because of his injuries, the 19-year-old had to make the painful choice to either have the bottom half of his body amputated or die.

“The doctors gave me a choice,” he stated in an interview with RTL 4. “Do you want to live or die?” was the inquiry. Would you rather die with the life you had or live with the circumstances as they are now?

While Loren was in the hospital, Sabia, his lover, bid him farewell six times. She was constantly informed by doctors that he wouldn’t survive.

Nevertheless, he was able to persevere. In 2020, the couple, who had been together for eighteen months when the disaster occurred, became engaged.

The decision

“Having half of my body amputated wasn’t a difficult decision; it was essentially a matter of living or dying,” Loren clarified.

“It really wasn’t a difficult decision for me because Sabia promised to always be by my side and because my entire immediate family was there!”

As previously stated, Loren’s accident occurred in September 2019 when he was compelled to drive beside a bridge to make room for oncoming traffic.

He attempted to jump out of the truck, but his leg became caught in his seatbelt as the structure collapsed beneath him.

He was severely injured when the car rolled three times before colliding with him. Although his pelvis was just too crushed, doctors attempted to salvage his lower extremities, including his left thigh, right hip, and genitalia.

His sperm could not be saved either.

According to girlfriend Sabia, “during the first month of him being in the hospital, there were a lot of heartfelt, tearful, sad conversations.”

He was still intubated and writing to us because he was unable to speak when we first said goodbye, which was before to his surgery.

He scrawled “I love you” on a piece of paper the night before his operation because it might have been our last night together. That piece of paper is still with me today.

The physicians would say that he was going to die, and after we said our goodbyes, he would not pass away.

To put it plainly, we detested it; it was awful. “He’s fine now, but we’re going to die soon, so you’ll all be sad.” His health was taunting us, but he lived.

The path to healing

It goes without saying that Loren had to endure an enormous recuperation procedure. He defied the doctors’ expectations and kept his will to live in spite of everything.

He was released from the hospital after three months, including four weeks in rehabilitation, despite the initial prediction that he would stay there for at least 18 months.

“My best advice to anyone going through something like this is that you can’t focus on the things you can’t have and you must live it to the fullest with what you do have,” Loren remarked in reference to his struggles.

Loren has refused to let his illness define him in spite of the difficulties he has encountered.

They tell their tale on YouTube with his wife, Sabia, and have amassed over 639,000 subscribers.

The couple has been open about their future intentions, which include traveling and starting a kid, in their videos.

Loren celebrated the fifth anniversary of the forklift accident that changed his life by looking back on his progress in one of his most recent videos. He revealed that although his suffering still exists, it has gotten easier to handle over time. Loren attributed his ability to “erase the phantom pain” he had endured over the years to the rehabilitation methods his doctors had taught him.

“My health is a little wild and out of control, but my pain is definitely more under control now,” he continued.

The query that everyone is asking

Particularly following Loren’s surgery, the pair has been subjected to more intrusive inquiries about their private lives—including their romantic life—as their YouTube channel has grown in popularity.

Sabia responded to one such query by asking The Daily Star, “‘How do we have s** and how do we become intimate?’ is a question we get repeatedly.”

“That is a very personal question that we are never going to answer or allude to, as it is very disrespectful,” she firmly replied. You wouldn’t ask a random couple on the street how they have s**, and people don’t have the right to inquire just because our situations are different.

However, Loren has been candid about other private matters, like his restroom habits. In a Q&A on YouTube, he clarified:

A colostomy is the removal of my colon to allow for bowel movements. Additionally, I had bilateral nephrectomies, which are tubes that enter my kidneys and empty them into bags. As a result, I fart, urinate, and poop in these ways.

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, a colostomy is a surgical treatment that makes a hole in the large intestines so that waste can leave the body.

“Do your friends still treat you the way they did before the accident?” was another question posed to Loren during a Q&A session. Do some of them make you joyful, astonished, or disappointed?

Loren said that the way some of his friends had responded left him feeling “a little disappointed.”

“A few friends emerged from the woods and have been incredibly helpful, while [others] completely reverted and have been withdrawn,” he said. “But it doesn’t matter to me; all I need is Sabia, you know.”

“Experiencing this together has undoubtedly strengthened a lot of the aspects of our relationship,” Sabia concurred.

What a young man who is very motivating. I can only imagine how someone must be affected by such a life-altering catastrophe, and Loren has shown himself to be very brave in this regard.
