Even though he is only 15, he has already survived storms that most people would perish. He remembers that terrible night—shivering on the street, his mother clinging to him for warmth—until his grandfather’s headlights broke through the darkness, offering a lifeline in the cold. He was abused by his stepfather and left homeless when he was twelve years old.
He tells me, “Everything fell apart in an instant.” Now, he puts all of his pain and suffering into Jason Isbell’s Cover Me Up while standing under the glaring stage lights. His voice trembles but does not break, raw with anguish and rage. The audience quiets down as the final note fades, leaving his story dangling in the air. The three judges started crying.
A few days prior to the premiere of Season 22, American Idol made public an amazing audition by a 15-year-old contestant named Triston Harper. People have been moved to tears by his heartbreaking story and amazing performance.
Before approaching the stage and showing off his abilities, Triston, who is from Alabama, discussed his past with judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie. He was severely abused by his stepfather by the time he was eleven years old, and by the time he was twelve, he was homeless.
“It all fell apart in a flash,” Triston told me. “Being homeless and sleeping on the streets with my mom was the worst period of my life.”
Triston remembered that first night on the streets, when he felt helpless. He begged for help as his mother was crying, and his grandfather complied.
He told me, “My pawpaw drove nonstop from Alabama to Arkansas to get us.” To please his mother, Triston Harper pursued a career in music.
The budding country music artist disclosed that his mother wanted him and his siblings to “be something,” which is why he “got into music.” He smiled and added that he never thought he would be able to share his story on American Idol.
After that, Triston Harper sang a heartfelt cover of Jason Isbell’s “Cover Me Up.”
