Lizzo, whose real name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, stated in a Vanity Fair interview that her music is a healing tool that stems from her Black experience and is not intended for any particular racial group. She stressed that her main audience consists of Black women, who she says need messages of self-love the most, despite the fact that her sound combines pop with R&B, hip-hop, and gospel.

Lizzo has been criticized for emphasizing her Black identity in her art, which she finds confusing because it reflects who she is, even though her fan base is broad. She also talked about more general topics like how Black women are treated in America and the effects of white male dominance.

Her message is supported by her activity; following the overturning of Roe v. Wade, she gave $500,000 to Planned Parenthood, which her tour promoter matched. Lizzo keeps using her position to advocate for equity, self-love, and justice.
