Rebecca De Mornay became a rising celebrity in Hollywood because to her role in Risky Business. Her future appeared bright, and her brilliance was apparent.

Strange upbringing
1959 saw the birth of Rebecca De Mornay in Santa Rosa, California. Many people have characterized her upbringing as unusual, even chaotic.
Her parents were Julie George, who aspired to be an actress, and Wally George, a radio jockey who subsequently became a right-wing TV personality.
Rebecca’s parents separated when she was just two years old. Tragically, the scientist her mother wedded died when Rebecca was just five years old.
Her mother made the decision to accompany Rebecca and her brother on a trip around Europe following this bereavement. After moving about in a Volkswagen van, they finally settled in a tiny Austrian town where Rebecca started school. Rebecca had to mature rapidly due to her nomadic lifestyle, and she was frequently perceived as being significantly older than her actual age.
She made her own decisions at a young age and was brave and responsible. She came back to the United States to pursue a profession when she was eighteen. At first, Rebecca loved to sing and wanted to become a folk singer or songwriter.

My mother’s desire to pursue a career in acting at a young age was the only thing I could identify with. She had simply been a mother; she hadn’t really done anything. When I was a young adolescent, she had told me, “I think you could be very gifted as an actress.” This, in my opinion, poisoned it since you don’t want to do whatever your mother says.
Breakthrough
De Mornay relocated to Los Angeles in 1980 and began studying acting at the renowned Lee Strasberg Institute.
Although De Mornay had a brief part in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1981 picture One from the Heart, it was her breakout performance in Risky Business, which came out just two years later, that really made her famous.
Rebecca portrays a sexy call lady named Lana in the 1983 movie, imparting some life lessons to a teenage Tom Cruise. She was ideal for the part because of her porcelain-doll features, piercing blue eyes, and blonde bangs. She was kind of a mystery figure in the film and exuded mystique.
Although most people recall the 1983 comedy as the catalyst for Cruise’s rise to fame, it also helped the then-unknown 24-year-old De Mornay establish a strong career.
In 1993, De Mornay told The Los Angeles Times, “I had only been auditioning for six months, which is nothing, when I got the female lead in a feature film that went on to become a monster hit.”

Director Paul Brickman was adamant about using De Mornay despite the demand to use a well-known actress. He stayed by his decision and made sure she was cast after trying out 400 ladies in the US and Europe.
De Mornay’s identification with the character Lana was one of the factors that allowed her to play the part so convincingly despite having very little prior experience. There were some similarities in their life tales.
“I’ve experienced a lot in my life, including family issues and turmoil, and all of a sudden there was a section that I knew and that fit me like a glove.”

A passionate relationship with Tom Cruise
Although De Mornay was certain from the beginning that Risky Business would be a success, she was unaware that it would also lead to a new romance. When they first met, De Mornay joked that she thought Cruise was “annoying,” but he soon won her over. Their relationship quickly developed into a two-and-a-half-year romance.
At this point, De Mornay was ecstatic. She was incredibly in love and one of Hollywood’s most attractive names. Looking back on their quick ascent to popularity, De Mornay said it was an exhilarating and overwhelming experience.
However, De Mornay’s momentum slowed and the business lost interest in her, while Cruise soared to become one of the most successful performers in movie history.
In 2023, she told The Wrap, “I was a more complicated, mysterious presence, innately than Tom.” In musical terms, I’m more of a minor chord, and his presence is more like, I’d say, a dominant chord.Major chords are incredibly popular in America.
Her career did not, however, entirely fade away. Throughout the 1980s, De Mornay kept up her work, with differing degrees of success. After Risky Business, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle was her biggest hit in 1992.
De Mornay’s portrayal of a vindictive widow who infiltrates the life of one of her late husband’s accusers made a lasting impression, and the psychological thriller was a huge financial success.
When I was creating it, I believed that I would be despised by everyone. However, everyone adored my role when the movie came out,” she told the LA Times.
De Mornay made roughly one movie a year on average during her career. Because she never actively sought popularity, she didn’t always get the big parts that some might have anticipated despite her talent.
It’s not as though my talent has increased. In hindsight, I received a solid education despite the rapid ups and downs in Hollywood. I went through multiple low points after a big hit. However, it all aided me in my attempt to distance myself,” she says.
The husband of Rebecca De Mornay
She decided to put her family first after meeting actor-turned-sportscaster Patrick O’Neal in 1995. Sophia, born on November 16, 1997, and Veronica, born on March 31, 2001, were the two girls they raised together.
Motherhood and a Hollywood profession are extremely difficult to juggle, and De Mornay knew this firsthand. She took her daughter Sophia to the set of Identity when it was being filmed. Additionally, she had to decline roles that required her to spend too much time away from her family or travel. In addition to De Mornay, several of her colleagues in the field have also been impacted by this problem. “When I turned 40, it was like I sent an invisible telegram to Hollywood that said, ‘Don’t hire me,'” De Mornay once recalled from a conversation with her friend Carol Kane.
The lack of meaningful responsibilities for women as they become older is a major contributing factor to the issue, and it has surely affected De Mornay’s career as well. She is nonetheless, however, among the fortunate few who have managed to maintain an acting profession.
Regardless of what women do or how they do it, she stated, “It has always been important to me to choose roles where there [is] some model of strength to women.”
