With more than 1.5 million YouTube subscribers, Brendan Kavanagh, also referred to as “Dr. K,” is an Irish modern British pianist and piano instructor.
He plays and promotes boogie-woogie, which is nearly always improvised and frequently blends elements of rock, blues, jazz, and traditional Irish music. He frequently performs at public pianos, occasionally with four hands with friends or onlookers.
He specializes in traditional Irish music and plays the accordion as well. Brendan Kavanaugh started Dr. K Media Limited in 2007 as a multi-platform interactive piano training company that specializes in boogie-woogie music. Since then, the company’s main focus has shifted to online piano teaching, sales, concerts, and promotion.
Wearing his signature dark hoodie and black sunglasses, he currently performs surreptitiously as Dr. K at public pianos in train stations, airports, and other open public spaces, especially in London. He occasionally poses as a security guard, police officer, or employee.
Sometimes he poses as an amateur, asks where the middle C is on the piano, tries to play a few notes badly, and then improvises to create a funny effect. This is one of his practical pranks on pedestrians or pianists.
“Do you know boogie-woogie?” he inquired. rather than asking, “What’s your name?” which resulted in the development of a peculiar meme.
