Many dog owners are concerned about the theft of their cherished animals. Some expensive and uncommon dog breeds are particularly vulnerable to dognapping.
However, one woman’s method of protecting her dog from burglars has sparked a lot of discussion and debate online, with some people applauding the concept and others raising doubts about the owner’s intentions.
Chloe owns a 2-year-old Great Pyreneese dog named Dandy, who has a highly unusual appearance because his owner dyed his fur brilliant red:
Her choice to color Dandy red sparked conflicting reactions on TikTok right away. Many comments read “poor dog,” raising questions about whether the coloring is healthy. Other comments have praised the dog’s unusual appearance and likened him to the famous Clifford the Big Red Dog.
In follow-up videos, Chloe gave her fans reassurance that she only uses vegan, pet-safe dye (apparently Opawz products) and gave an explanation of the dog’s amazing transformation.
Since the Great Pyreneese puppy is a “rare breed in [her] area,” she added that part of the reason was to “keep him from getting stolen.”
Additionally, Chloe stated that Dan “loves people and kids” and that he seems to like his new hue, and that the red dye makes the dog “more approachable.”
In subsequent videos, she teaches viewers how to dye their own dogs, adding that she wished to “educate others on safe pet dye practices.”
Dandy’s TikTok videos, which have received over 318,000 followers and 10 million likes, have sparked ongoing discussion.
Critics have questioned Chloe’s motivations, pointing out that the color was only used to garner attention online and is unlikely to turn off would-be dognappers.
However, proponents have argued that Dandy appears to be a contented and well-cared-for dog who is unaware of his color and that the owner is free to dye her dog for any reason as long as it is safe and humane.
Despite its popularity, Dandy’s TikTok hasn’t been active since February. The most current image on his Instagram, which was taken in July, depicts Dandy’s fur returning to its original color after the dye has faded:
It’s unclear what color Dandy is right now, but Chloe stated that he “needs a touch up” and that he will be “red soon.”
However, many of the comments begged her to keep Dandy in his “true colors” rather than re-dying him.
How do you feel about Dandy being dyed bright red? Is it an enjoyable method of protecting the dog from abductors, or is it needless and subpar care?
