Kate Winslet revealed a humorous behind-the-scenes detail about the famous door sequence from Titanic more than 25 years after the film’s release.
Winslet was questioned about the iconic scene in which her character Rose and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack fight to survive in the frigid Atlantic Ocean while promoting her most recent movie, Lee.
She clarified, “That tank was pretty clumsy. To be clear, at the time, it was just waist-high. I hate to say it, Leo was on his knees. “I probably shouldn’t be saying this, but Jimmy Cameron’s going to call me,” Winslet joked, alluding to James Cameron, the director of Titanic.
The scene became a bit more awkward when she disclosed that the tank was narrow in addition to shallow. She chuckled and said, “I’d often ask, ‘Can I just go for a pee?'” She would get off the door, go to the edge of the tank, and then get back on the door.
She described the tank as “amazing” despite its size because of its infinity pool design, which allowed water to continuously flow over the edge. During the last 22 minutes of filming, Winslet added, the sound of the waves kept the actors “entirely looped.”
The question of whether Jack and Rose could both fit on the door has long been disputed by fans. Although Mythbusters acknowledged that it was feasible, Cameron underlined that Jack’s passing was essential to the plot. “He could have fit on that door, but it wouldn’t have stayed afloat,” Winslet further stated.
