Weeping elephants mourn a lost baby in a funeral march like humans

Last Friday, Parveen Kaswan, a forest ranger with the Indian Foreign Service, shared a video of Indian elephants doing a human-style baby elephant funeral.

As shocked social media users gathered to share their awe and compassion for the elephants, Kawan’s video went viral.

The video, which was shared on Twitter, shows an elephant carrying a deceased baby elephant’s body in its trunk as it emerges from some bushes.

While waiting for other elephants to join, the adult elephant protected it by laying down its body. More elephants came and surrounded the baby elephant, walking in a line akin to a funeral procession.

Then, with additional elephants trailing after, the original elephant raised the infant again.

The post received more than 12,000 likes and more than 5,000 retweets on Twitter.

In the past, elephants have been seen to mourn their deceased, much as people do.
