Singing talent shows have long been popular in the United States. Since “American Idol” dominated the ratings in its initial season, imitation shows have emerged. Large audiences are drawn to singing talent competition shows, such as “The Voice” and the “Got Talent” series.
Andrew De Leon, who wears gothic clothing and has thick eyeliner, is one of the Top Ten Most Shocking Voices. In contrast to the judges’ expectations of emo rock or death metal, he sings with the most beautiful operatic voice. After he hits several high notes, Andrew receives a standing ovation from the judges and audience.
The adorable six-year-old Aaralyn follows. She is accompanied by her brother Isaiah, who plays the drums. The small girl starts yelling the words as soon as the music starts. Among the judges who are taken aback is Howard Stern. She seems so innocent and naive, even when singing in a death metal style.
Gingzilla, a crossdresser, has another Top Ten video. Gingzilla sings a jazzy version of “oeSeven Nation Army.” The judges are amazed by Gingzilla’s operatic, low, and then girlish high singing.
The judges are mesmerized by Marcelito Pomoy’s symphony. His voice sounds feminine and hits high notes. The judge, Howie Mandel, finds it hard to believe he is speaking. After impressing the judges with his high notes, he dips incredibly deep halfway through the song. Four judges give Marcelito “Yes” votes, even if he sings a duet with himself.
Vocalist John Hetlinger is eighty-two years old and was born in Broomfield, Colorado. He is a former aeronautical engineer. When everyone expects Frank Sinatra to perform a famous song or ballad, John starts off with the heavy metal screamer “Let the Bodies Hit the Floor.” The audience erupts in laughter as the judges chuckle in disbelief.
Simon Cowell appears startled by the following group, “oeMiss Tres,” which dresses like ladies but sings and dances like guys. Another participant, Dev, is dressed like a demon, complete with large horns protruding from his head and a red visage. His songs are performed like those of a Broadway star. The judges are completely baffled by this makeup and performance. These videos teach us to be skeptical of what we see!
