The camera moves to Simon Cowell, who appears uninterested, as she starts to play. With his palm raised above the desk, he prepares to press his red buzzer. Before he clicks the button, Gabriella drops the violin and performs an audition that went viral on the internet and astounded Simon and the other judges. Although Gabriella Laberge, a French-Canadian singer, had high hopes for her America’s Got Talent audition, they almost fell apart at the first hurdle. After an uncomfortable initial interview, Laberge played a lovely violin section, but it was the same as what you’d hear from any Main Street street performer. Laberge was preparing an ace under her sleeve as Simon Cowell prepared to fire her with his red buzzer.
She sang James Blunt’s “Goodbye My Lover,” and her lovely, gentle voice filled the room. The judges started to get to know the Montreal musician as soon as Cowell pulled his hand away from the red buzzer. Laberge added her own touch to the well-known song and gave the singing a little twang by referencing the folk elements of the song. She skillfully transitioned into a violin solo during the bridge, intensified the outro, and carried on the performance, earning a standing ovation.
