I emailed my hubby a photo of me standing next our neighbor’s horse on a typical day. At the time, I didn’t give it much thought.
After a while of helping out at the stables, Thunder, a huge black horse, became my favorite. He was nice and compassionate despite his stature.
But everything changed when my spouse saw the photo. His message arrived abruptly and coldly after he zoomed in and examined it closely many times.
“I’d like a divorce.”
I assumed that must be a prank. However, when he called, it was clear that he was angry.
He insisted, “How long has this been going on?”
“What are you discussing?” Confused, I asked.
He yelled, “The shadow.” “On your back. Don’t tell me lies.
I went cold. I then took another look at the photo to see what he had observed.
My back was shadowed by Thunder’s head and neck, giving me the unsettling appearance of a guy standing behind me with his hands around my waist.
That’s when I understood what he thought. It appeared to him that I wasn’t alone myself.
He wouldn’t believe me when I tried to explain that it was only the horse’s shadow. There was no amount of explanation that could change his viewpoint. The picture had deceived him, distorting reality just enough to instantly undermine his confidence. It was the faith in us that was destroyed, not just the picture. No explanation could undo the damage, and he began to question everything.
